Lt. Gen. Hilbert discusses Eighth Army’s role in Northeast Asia

CARLISLE BARRACKS, Pa. — Lt. Gen. Joe E. Hilbert spoke with U.S. Army War College students Oct. 16, 2026, about Eighth Army’s role in supporting U.S. Forces Korea and contributing to deterrence across Northeast Asia.

Hilbert described the region as strategically important because of its geography, security environment and network of allies. He outlined how Eighth Army supports the joint force as an Army operational-level command on the Korean Peninsula.

“We live in a strategic region—strategic because of its geography, our adversaries and our allies,” Hilbert said. “Eighth Army supports U.S. Forces Korea and enables the joint force to deter forward.”

During the visit, Hilbert discussed Eighth Army’s support to the joint force through convergence, strike, close battle and theater sustainment. He also emphasized the importance of integration with U.S., Republic of Korea and regional partners.

The engagement provided U.S. Army War College students an opportunity to learn more about Eighth Army’s mission and its role in maintaining readiness and supporting security on the Korean Peninsula. Hilbert is a 2015 graduate of the U.S. Army War College.
