Japan Unveils Indo-Pacific Strategy Focused on Supply Chain Security
(MENAFN) Japan has underscored the importance of reinforcing supply chain stability in energy resources and essential materials as part of its updated Indo-Pacific policy, according to statements delivered by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during a visit to Vietnam.
According to reports, Takaichi introduced the revised framework while addressing students at Vietnam National University during her trip, which spanned from Friday to Sunday. The updated strategy, titled the Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision, reflects adjustments in response to rapid global transformations, including technological advancements, emerging challenges tied to growth in the Global South, and increasing geopolitical rivalry.
As stated by general accounts, the policy outlines three main focus areas. These include developing economic infrastructure suited to the age of artificial intelligence and data, with particular emphasis on strengthening supply chains for energy and key materials; fostering economic expansion through collaboration between governments and the private sector alongside shared regulatory frameworks; and boosting security partnerships to maintain peace and stability across the region.
The plan also details multiple initiatives aimed at supporting these goals. According to reports, these involve cooperation on mineral recycling with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, participation in joint international research projects under Horizon Europe, and collaboration with France on refining rare earth materials.
Additional measures include efforts to improve pharmaceutical supply chains in partnership with the United States, as well as plans to provide unmanned aerial vehicles to countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Tonga.
"In the Indo-Pacific, where supply chains cross national borders in complex ways, maintaining and expanding a rules-based economic order is indispensable for sustainable economic growth," said Takaichi in her speech.
She further noted that Japan intends to support the expansion of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership as part of its broader economic strategy.
